Cesar Chavez Day passed the California Senate and Assembly on August 10, 2000, becoming a law that requires all public schools in California to close for the holiday. In addition, the State Board of Education requires schools to honor Cesar Chavez with curriculum related to the history of the farm labor movement in the United States, and specifically Cesar Chavez’s role in it.
